God the Beginning and the End

God is the beginning and the end, the Alpha and the Omega, the One who was before all things and who will remain forever. Scripture proclaims that all of history rests in his hands, from creation to its consummation. Nothing began without him, and nothing will be brought to completion outside of his purpose. This truth frames the whole Bible and gives the believer an unshakable anchor. The opening pages of Scripture begin with this majestic declaration: "In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth" (Genesis 1:1). The Gospel of John takes up this same word to reveal the pre-existence of the Word: "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God" (John 1:1). Before time was, God was; and it is by his Word that all things came into being. The book of Revelation completes this revelation by placing a sovereign word in the mouth of the Lord: "I am the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last, the beginning and the end" (Revelation 22:13). The One who began all things will also bring all things to their end. History is neither a circle without an exit nor a blind drift, but a story whose two ends God holds in his hand. These verses invite us to trust in the One who upholds both the origin and the outcome of all things. Since nothing escapes his control, our entire life is kept by the Lord. "The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge" (Proverbs 1:7): to acknowledge God as the source and end of everything is to find security and hope.
