Athletes in the Bible
The Bible frequently draws on the image of the athlete to teach believers about discipline, perseverance, and the goal of the Christian life. The apostle Paul, writing in a world familiar with the Greek games, used the runner, the boxer, and the prize-seeking competitor as pictures of wholehearted devotion to Christ. For athletes today, and for every believer, these passages offer both encouragement and a sober call to train and to run with purpose. Paul's clearest use of this imagery comes in 1 Corinthians 9.24, "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one receives the prize? So run that you may obtain it." He follows this in 1 Corinthians 9.25, "Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable." The discipline an athlete gives to a fading trophy ought to be exceeded by the believer's devotion to an eternal reward. The race is also a picture of endurance to the end. Near the close of his life Paul testified in 2 Timothy 4.7, "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." Hebrews 12.1 calls every believer to the same: "let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us," surrounded by a great cloud of witnesses. The goal of this race is Christ Himself. In Philippians 3.14 Paul presses "toward the goal for the prize of the upward call of God in Christ Jesus." Yet Scripture keeps the body and soul in proportion. 1 Timothy 4.8 reminds us, "while bodily training is of some value, godliness is of value in every way, as it holds promise for the present life and also for the life to come." For the athlete of faith, physical training has its place, but spiritual discipline, fixed on Christ, is the contest that truly matters and the prize that never fades.
