Almsgiving in the Bible

Almsgiving is the practice of generously giving to the poor and needy, and Scripture treats it not as optional charity but as a central expression of love for God and neighbor. The Bible commends such giving warmly, while insisting that its true value lies in the heart behind it. Jesus assumed his followers would give to the needy, but warned against doing so for show: "When you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do... to be honored by others" (Matthew 6:2). Instead he taught a hidden, humble generosity: "When you give to the needy, do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" (Matthew 6:3). Almsgiving is meant to bless the poor, not to advertise the giver. The Bible frames generosity toward the poor as a transaction with God himself. "Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done" (Proverbs 19:17). Far from impoverishing the giver, such kindness is treated by God as a loan he personally repays. Jesus pressed this further, urging his disciples to invest in what lasts: "Sell your possessions and give to the poor. Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven that will never fail" (Luke 12:33). Generosity relocates a person's treasure and therefore their heart. The spirit of almsgiving matters as much as the act. Paul taught, "Each of you should give what you have decided in your heart to give, not reluctantly or under compulsion, for God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7). And he passed on words of Jesus not recorded in the Gospels: "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35). Together these passages reveal almsgiving as a joyful, God-centered habit of mercy. It imitates the generosity of God, stores up treasure that cannot be lost, and turns the believer's resources into instruments of compassion for those in need.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about giving to the poor?
Scripture commands and commends generosity to the needy. "Whoever is kind to the poor lends to the Lord, and he will reward them for what they have done" (Proverbs 19:17), and Jesus taught, "Sell your possessions and give to the poor... a treasure in heaven that will never fail" (Luke 12:33). Giving to the poor is treated as service to God himself.
How should we give according to Jesus?
Humbly and without seeking praise. Jesus warned, "When you give to the needy, do not announce it with trumpets, as the hypocrites do" (Matthew 6:2), but rather, "do not let your left hand know what your right hand is doing" (Matthew 6:3). The goal is to bless the poor, not to be honored by others.
Why does God value generosity so highly?
Because giving reflects God's own heart and blesses the giver. Paul wrote, "God loves a cheerful giver" (2 Corinthians 9:7), and recalled Jesus' words, "It is more blessed to give than to receive" (Acts 20:35). Generosity stores up "treasure in heaven that will never fail" (Luke 12:33), enriching the giver in what truly lasts.
