Allegiance in the Bible

Allegiance, in the Bible, is the question of who or what holds the ultimate loyalty of the human heart. Scripture presents life as a series of choices about whom we will serve, and it consistently calls God's people to an undivided devotion to the Lord alone. Joshua framed the matter as a decision that each generation must make for itself: "Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... But as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15). Allegiance is not a vague sentiment but a deliberate commitment that shapes a whole household and way of life. The first commandment makes exclusive loyalty the foundation of the covenant: "You shall have no other gods before me" (Exodus 20:3). This is not the jealousy of a petty tyrant but the rightful claim of the Creator, who alone is worthy of supreme love. That love is to be wholehearted: "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength" (Deuteronomy 6:5). Divided allegiance, by contrast, is shown to be impossible. Jesus said plainly, "No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve both God and money" (Matthew 6:24). The heart cannot ultimately bow to two rival lords. Scripture therefore confronts the temptation to waver. Through Elijah, God challenged Israel, "How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him" (1 Kings 18:21). And Jesus warned that genuine allegiance presses forward without looking back: "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62). Far from being oppressive, this call to single-hearted loyalty is the path to freedom and joy, for the One who claims our allegiance is the very God who made us, redeems us, and is alone worthy of our whole-life trust.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does the Bible say about allegiance to God?
Scripture calls for exclusive, wholehearted loyalty to the Lord. "You shall have no other gods before me" (Exodus 20:3), and we are to "love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength" (Deuteronomy 6:5). Allegiance to God is the foundation of the covenant relationship.
Can a person be loyal to both God and other things?
Jesus said no: "No one can serve two masters... You cannot serve both God and money" (Matthew 6:24). Elijah pressed the same point: "How long will you waver between two opinions?" (1 Kings 18:21). The Bible teaches that ultimate allegiance cannot be divided; the heart will finally serve one lord.
How do I choose to follow God wholeheartedly?
It begins with a deliberate decision, as Joshua urged: "Choose for yourselves this day whom you will serve... as for me and my household, we will serve the Lord" (Joshua 24:15). Jesus added that true followers press on without turning back: "No one who puts a hand to the plow and looks back is fit for service in the kingdom of God" (Luke 9:62).
