Affliction in the Bible

Affliction is part of the human experience: no one escapes trials, pain, or seasons of distress. Yet Scripture does not treat suffering as a hopeless fate. It surrounds affliction with hope, affirming that God is near to the afflicted, that He redeems suffering, and that in His hands nothing is ever lost. Present distress does not have the last word. The apostle Paul gives affliction an eternal perspective in 2 Corinthians 4:17: "For our light affliction, which is but for a moment, worketh for us a far more exceeding and eternal weight of glory." What seems crushing is called "light" and "momentary" when compared with the glory God is preparing. This hope does not deny the reality of pain, but it places it within the gracious purpose of the Lord. In distress, God does not remain distant. Psalm 34:18 affirms, "The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit." He is also described as "the God of all comfort; who comforteth us in all our tribulation" (2 Corinthians 1:3-4), so that we in turn may comfort others. Affliction thus becomes ground for fellowship and growth. Scripture even teaches that tribulation "worketh patience; and patience, experience; and experience, hope" (Romans 5:3-4). These verses comfort the one passing through trials, reminding us that pain entrusted to a faithful God is transformed into hope and glory to come.
