What the Bible Says About Adultery
Adultery is the breaking of the marriage covenant through sexual unfaithfulness, and the Bible treats it as a serious sin against God, against one's spouse, and against oneself. The seventh commandment states it plainly: "You shall not commit adultery" (Exodus 20:14). Marriage is a sacred covenant established by God, and adultery violates the trust, intimacy, and faithfulness that marriage was designed to protect. The writer of Hebrews affirms its sanctity: "Let marriage be held in honor among all, and let the marriage bed be undefiled, for God will judge the sexually immoral and adulterous" (Hebrews 13:4). Scripture warns of the destructive consequences of adultery. Proverbs declares, "He who commits adultery lacks sense; he who does it destroys himself" (Proverbs 6:32). Far from being a private matter, it brings ruin upon the one who pursues it. Paul urges believers to flee such temptation altogether: "Flee from sexual immorality. Every other sin a person commits is outside the body, but the sexually immoral person sins against his own body" (1 Corinthians 6:18). Jesus deepened the commandment by reaching to the heart. "Everyone who looks at a woman with lustful intent has already committed adultery with her in his heart" (Matthew 5:28). Faithfulness, he taught, is not merely outward but a matter of the inner life, of guarded thoughts and pure desires. This call exposes every person's need for grace, for none can claim perfect purity of heart. Yet the Bible's message about adultery is not only law but also mercy. When a woman caught in adultery was brought to Jesus, he did not condemn her, but neither did he excuse the sin: "Neither do I condemn you; go, and from now on sin no more" (John 8:11). Here we see the heart of the gospel, forgiveness that frees and transforms. The Bible calls husbands and wives to honor their vows, to guard their hearts, and, where there has been failure, to seek the cleansing and restoring grace found in Christ.
