Adonai in the Bible
Adonai is one of the great names of God in the Hebrew Scriptures, meaning 'Lord' or 'Master,' and it expresses the sovereign authority and rightful ownership of God over all creation and over every life that belongs to Him. Whereas the name Yahweh emphasizes God's covenant faithfulness and self-existence, Adonai underscores His lordship: He is the Master to whom we owe our worship, our obedience, and our trust. The name appears at pivotal moments. In Genesis 15:2, Abram cries out, 'O Lord GOD, what will you give me, for I continue childless?' addressing God as 'Adonai' even in the midst of unanswered longing, acknowledging Him as sovereign Master over his future. Psalm 8:1 lifts the title into worship: 'O LORD, our Lord, how majestic is your name in all the earth!' Here God's lordship fills heaven and earth with glory. Isaiah's vision in Isaiah 6:1 places Adonai upon the throne: 'I saw the Lord sitting upon a throne, high and lifted up, and the train of his robe filled the temple.' The God who is Master reigns in unrivaled holiness. Psalm 110:1 then reveals a profound mystery: 'The LORD says to my Lord, Sit at my right hand,' a verse Jesus applied to Himself, pointing to the divine lordship of the Messiah. Adonai also calls His people to exclusive devotion. Exodus 23:17 commands that 'three times in the year shall all your males appear before the Lord GOD,' and Deuteronomy 10:17 declares Him 'God of gods and Lord of lords, the great, the mighty, and the awesome God.' To confess Adonai is to bow before the One who alone is Lord, surrendering every claim of self-rule to His gracious and supreme authority.
