The Good Shepherd in the Bible
Jesus called himself "the good shepherd," the one who knows his sheep, leads them, and lays down his life for them. "I am the good shepherd: the good shepherd giveth his life for the sheep" (John 10:11). This image runs through the whole of Scripture, for already King David sang, "The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want" (Psalm 23:1). The biblical shepherd is not a distant keeper but an attentive guide who provides for the needs of his flock, makes it lie down "in green pastures," leads it "beside the still waters," and restores the soul. He guides his sheep "in the paths of righteousness" and walks with them even "through the valley of the shadow of death," where his presence drives away every fear. The prophet Isaiah describes the tenderness of this shepherd: "He shall gather the lambs with his arm, and carry them in his bosom" (Isaiah 40:11). The good shepherd also seeks the straying sheep until he finds it, and rejoices to carry it home (Luke 15:4-6). These verses comfort the believer with the certainty of tender and constant care. In trials as in peaceful days, God walks before his sheep, knows each one by name, and watches over them with a faithfulness that never grows weary. Whoever follows him will lack nothing the Shepherd knows to be good, for the One who laid down his life for the sheep will surely supply all that they truly need. To belong to the good shepherd is therefore to live without ultimate fear: he goes before, he gathers the weak in his arms, and he carries the wandering home, so that not one of his own is finally lost.
