Bible Verses and Prayers for Doctors
Medicine is a vocation of extraordinary spiritual depth. Sirach 38:1 says, "Honour a physician with the honour due unto him for the uses which ye may have of him: for the Lord hath created him." Jesus Himself is portrayed as the Great Physician, going about "healing every sickness and every disease among the people" (Matthew 9:35). The medical art reflects God's compassion for the suffering, and every act of healing is a participation in the healing nature of God Himself. Scripture honors the work of healing as a genuine calling. Luke, the author of the third Gospel and the book of Acts, was a physician, called by Paul "the beloved physician" (Colossians 4:14). Sirach 38:1-14 explicitly praises medicine as a gift of God: the physician's wisdom comes from the Most High, and God brings medicines out of the earth. Faith and medicine are not opposed; they are two expressions of God's care for the human being made in His image. The burnout of caregivers is a real and recognized burden, and Scripture offers strength for the weary. "He giveth power to the faint; and to them that have no might he increaseth strength... they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength" (Isaiah 40:29-31). Even Jesus regularly withdrew to pray (Luke 5:16). The dignity of every patient rests on the image of God in which each person is made (Genesis 1:27), and Proverbs 31:8-9 calls us to speak for those who cannot defend themselves, a principle that applies directly to vulnerable patients in the physician's care.
