Do Not Judge in the Bible

Jesus taught, "Judge not, that ye be not judged" (Matthew 7:1). Scripture warns against hypocritical and condemning judgment, calling the believer to humility and mercy. This warning does not mean the abandonment of discernment, but the refusal to set oneself up as the supreme judge in the place of God, and the reminder that the measure we apply to others will be applied to us: "for with what judgment ye judge, ye shall be judged" (Matthew 7:2). Jesus illustrates this truth with a striking image: before seeking to remove the speck from a brother's eye, one must first take the beam out of one's own eye (Matthew 7:3-5). The danger is not judgment in itself, but the blindness of the one who condemns others while ignoring his own faults. Humility begins with an honest examination of oneself before God, prior to any glance cast upon a neighbor. Scripture clearly distinguishes condemning judgment from wise discernment. "Judge not according to the appearance, but judge righteous judgment" (John 7:24). The believer is called not to shut his eyes to evil, but to discern with love and truth, without usurping the place of God as Judge or treating his neighbor harshly. These verses invite us to treat others with the same grace we ourselves need to receive, always beginning by examining ourselves first.
