Prayer for Marriage in the Bible

The Bible presents marriage as God's own design, instituted in the garden before sin entered the world. Genesis 2:24 lays the foundation: "Therefore shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife: and they shall be one flesh." Marriage is thus a covenant union in which two distinct persons are joined by God into a single new household, a bond meant to be exclusive, permanent, and life-giving. Proverbs 18:22 adds the note of grace: "Whoso findeth a wife findeth a good thing, and obtaineth favour of the LORD." Jesus reaffirmed this design when challenged about divorce. Quoting Genesis, He said in Matthew 19:5-6, "they twain shall be one flesh... What therefore God hath joined together, let not man put asunder." Marriage is not a human arrangement to be dissolved at will but a work of God that carries His authority. This is why Malachi 2:16 records God's sober word, "I hate putting away," a warning against the casual breaking of the marriage covenant and a call to faithfulness. The New Testament fills the covenant with mutual love and self-giving. 1 Corinthians 7:3 commands that husband and wife render to one another the affection and care that is due, while Ephesians 5:25 sets the highest standard for husbands: "love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it." Marriage becomes a living picture of Christ's sacrificial devotion to His people. Finally, Scripture surrounds marriage with honor and purity. Hebrews 13:4 declares, "Marriage is honourable in all, and the bed undefiled." Far from being merely a contract, biblical marriage is a sacred, God-witnessed covenant of faithful love, modeling the gospel and inviting husband and wife to lay down their lives for one another.

Biblical Prayer for Marriage in the Bible

A Prayer for My Marriage

Lord, thank You for my marriage and for the person You have joined to my life. Your Word says a cord of three strands is not quickly broken. Be the third strand in our marriage, the One who holds us together when we cannot hold ourselves. Where we have grown distant, draw us close again. Where words have wounded, bring forgiveness. Soften our hearts toward each other and help us to listen, to be patient, and to assume the best. Renew our love — not only the feeling, but the daily choice to serve, honor, and stay. Teach us to forgive as You have forgiven us, and to build our home on You rather than on our own strength. Guard our marriage against everything that would divide us. May we grow old together still walking with You and with each other. In Jesus' name, Amen.

Ecclesiastes 4:12

And if one prevail against him, two shall withstand him; and a threefold cord is not quickly broken.
