Prayer for Children
Children in the Bible are presented as a precious gift from God, a sacred trust to be nurtured in faith, and living examples of the humble dependence that marks true citizens of God's kingdom. Far from being treated as marginal, the young are woven through Scripture as blessings to be received with gratitude, disciples to be instructed, and souls to be welcomed in the name of the Lord. The Bible first frames children as a divine blessing rather than a mere social inevitability. The psalmist declares, 'Behold, children are a heritage from the LORD, the fruit of the womb a reward' (Psalm 127:3), naming sons and daughters as a gift entrusted by God himself. With that gift comes responsibility, for parents are called not simply to provide but to disciple. Solomon counsels, 'Train up a child in the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it' (Proverbs 22:6), and Moses commands that God's words be taught diligently at home: 'You shall teach them diligently to your children, and shall talk of them when you sit in your house' (Deuteronomy 6:7). Faith is to be passed from one generation to the next within the rhythms of daily life. Jesus reserves some of his tenderest words for children. When his disciples tried to keep little ones away, he was indignant and said, 'Let the little children come to me and do not hinder them, for to such belongs the kingdom of God' (Mark 10:14). He went further still, making a child the very picture of saving faith: 'Truly, I say to you, unless you turn and become like children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven' (Matthew 18:3). Their trust, humility, and openness model the posture every believer must take before God. Scripture also addresses children directly, dignifying them as members of the covenant community with their own calling: 'Children, obey your parents in the Lord, for this is right' (Ephesians 6:1). Taken together, these passages portray children as gifts to cherish, learners to disciple, and teachers, in their simple faith, of what it means to receive the kingdom of God.
Biblical Prayer for Children
A Prayer for My Children
Father, I lift my children to You, for they are a heritage and a gift from Your hand. Help me to train them up in the way they should go, so that even when they are old they will not depart from it. They are not truly mine but Yours, given into my care for a season, and I want to steward that trust well. Protect them today — their bodies, their minds, and their hearts. Guard them from harm I can see and from dangers I cannot. Surround them with Your favor as with a shield, and watch over them in every place I cannot be. Give me wisdom to raise them well: patience when I am tired, gentleness when I am frustrated, and consistency when it would be easier to give in. Help me to teach them Your ways not only with my words but in the ordinary moments of the day — when we sit at home and when we walk along the road, when we lie down and when we rise. Let them see a living faith in me, so that what I say and how I live tell the same story. Remind me of how dearly You love them. Jesus welcomed the little children and would not let anyone turn them away, saying the kingdom of God belongs to such as these. Grow in me that same tenderness, and keep me from exasperating or discouraging them. Give me, too, a childlike faith as I lead them. Most of all, draw their hearts to You. May they come to know You for themselves — not merely borrowing my faith but finding their own — love what is good, turn from what is evil, and walk with You all the days of their lives. Whatever paths they take, hold them fast, and bring them home to You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will not depart from it.
