The Pentecost Feast, also called the Feast of Weeks or the Feast of Harvest, was one of the three great annual festivals God appointed for Israel. It was a celebration of gratitude for the grain harvest and a recognition that every good gift comes from the LORD. The timing was carefully fixed by counting from the offering of the firstfruits: "And ye shall count unto you from the morrow after the sabbath... seven sabbaths shall be complete" (LEV.23.15), "even unto the morrow after the seventh sabbath shall ye number fifty days" (LEV.23.16). On that fiftieth day the people brought a special offering: "Ye shall bring out of your habitations two wave loaves... they shall be baken with leaven; they are the firstfruits unto the LORD" (LEV.23.17), presenting the fruit of the harvest back to God in thanksgiving. The instructions were repeated through Israel's history. Moses commanded, "Seven weeks shalt thou number unto thee: begin to number the seven weeks from such time as thou beginnest to put the sickle to the corn" (DEU.16.9), and then "thou shalt keep the feast of weeks unto the LORD thy God with a tribute of a freewill offering of thine hand, which thou shalt give unto the LORD thy God, according as the LORD thy God hath blessed thee" (DEU.16.10). The feast was an occasion of joyful, generous giving in proportion to God's blessing. It was also tied to the agricultural calendar in the earliest law: "And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, of the firstfruits of wheat harvest" (EXO.34.22). The Pentecost Feast finds its fullest meaning in the New Testament. It was on this very day that the Holy Spirit was poured out: "And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place" (ACT.2.1). The feast that celebrated the firstfruits of the wheat harvest became the day of the firstfruits of a spiritual harvest, as thousands were brought into the church. For believers, the Pentecost Feast points beyond grain to grace — reminding us that God is the giver of every harvest, that thankful generosity honors Him, and that His Spirit gathers a people for His name from all the earth.
