Music holds an extraordinary place in Scripture and is, above all, an act of worship. The Psalms—the most quoted book in the New Testament—are a collection of songs, and Psalm 33:3 exhorts: "Sing to him a new song; play skillfully on the strings, with loud shouts." From the beginning, God's people have used musical talent to honor their Creator. David organized four thousand musicians for the service of the temple (1 Chronicles 23:5), and the Psalms preserve numerous musical notations that reveal how central music was to the worship of Israel. In the New Testament, Colossians 3:16 invites the church to teach and admonish one another "in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God." The Christian musician discovers that his gift is not an end in itself but an instrument of praise placed in the service of God. Colossians 3:23 offers the guiding principle: "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men." This truth protects the artist from the idolatry of fame and the tyranny of expectations, for his joy rests not on success but on relationship with the One who inspires his music. Revelation 5:8-9 shows heaven filled with harps and a new song, reminding us that the musical vocation finds its consummation in the eternal worship of the Lamb. So the musician who creates "as for the Lord" transforms each note into an offering and each melody into a prayer.
