Bible Verses for What the Bible Says About Abortion

The Bible does not use the word "abortion," but it speaks clearly and tenderly about the value of human life from its very beginning. Scripture consistently portrays the unborn child as a person known and loved by God, formed by his own hand. The psalmist declares to the Lord, "For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb" (Psalm 139:13), and continues, "Your eyes saw my unformed substance; in your book were written, every one of them, the days that were formed for me" (Psalm 139:16). These verses present God as personally involved in shaping each child long before birth. The Lord's words to the prophet Jeremiah reach back even further: "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, and before you were born I consecrated you" (Jeremiah 1:5). Personhood and divine calling are present, in God's sight, before birth. Children are not accidents or burdens but gifts: "Behold, children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward" (Psalm 127:3). In the Gospel of Luke, the unborn John the Baptist "leaped" in Elizabeth's womb at the presence of the unborn Jesus (Luke 1:41), a striking testimony to the life and awareness of a child before birth. The sixth commandment, "You shall not murder" (Exodus 20:13), protects innocent human life. Taken together with the passages above, the consistent witness of Scripture leads Christians to regard the deliberate ending of an unborn life as a grave moral wrong, because that life bears the image of God. Yet the Bible's voice is not only one of moral clarity but also of grace. Many who have been touched by abortion carry deep grief, guilt, or regret. Scripture offers genuine hope: there is no sin beyond the reach of the cross. God's compassion, forgiveness, and healing are freely available through Jesus Christ to all who turn to him. The biblical witness calls believers both to defend the vulnerable and to extend Christ's mercy to those who are hurting.
