The number 666 appears in one of the most discussed passages of Scripture: "This calls for wisdom. Let the person who has insight calculate the number of the beast, for it is the number of a man. That number is 666" (Revelation 13:18). John presents it not to provoke fear but to summon discernment from God's people during a time of persecution. The verse states that the number belongs to "a man," pointing to a human figure who embodies organized rebellion against God. The context clarifies the meaning. The beast forces "all people, great and small, rich and poor, free and slave, to receive a mark on their right hands or on their foreheads" (Revelation 13:16), "so that they could not buy or sell unless they had the mark, which is the name of the beast or the number of its name" (Revelation 13:17). The mark represents allegiance, economic, political, and spiritual loyalty to a power that demands the worship due only to God.
